Abu Dhabi International Triathlon
It’s becoming tradition that I go to at least one place very far away to race each year. This year, it looks like I’ll be heading to Abu Dhabi to race on March 3, 2012. This race is a really odd distance because it has a monstrous bike leg and a relatively short swim and run. It’s a 2km/1.24mile swim, 200km/124mile bike, and a 20km/12.4 mile run. Because this race is during the school year, I’ll essentially be going to the Abu Dhabi for the weekend.
After this race will be the one time I hope to have a teacher single me out and say, “what did you do this weekend?” because I want to see the look on their face when I say I that went to the Middle East.
I’m not sure what other races I’ll do next year, but I’m hoping I make it back to Europe.

2011 Nautica Malibu Triathlon Race Report
Last Sunday was the first time I got to really rip it up in a race on my Wilier TriCrono. Wow, that bike is awesome. The only time I was ever passed was by Dave Zabriskie… so that’s to be understood. I’m really happy with my result here. This is the first triathlon I ever saw back when I was 13, so being able to pull off third place as an elite was a pretty surreal experience.
Swim: I absolutely love ocean swimming, but to be honest, I was a bit nervous for this swim because I haven’t been home in Los Angeles for almost 10 months. I didn’t have the twice weekly ocean swims in me that I used to have. I lucked out on Sunday and the surf was VERY small. The waves were so small that I had a difficult time catching a wave in. Before the swim started, I had a chance to chat with David Denman, the actor who places Roy on The Office. The Office is one of my favorite shows, so I was really stoked about that.
Bike: I had an interesting experience on the bike. I was feeling a bit sore for some reason and then my right calf completely froze up about 14 miles in. My muscle contracted and then just stayed like that. I was in absolute agony for a minute. I just stayed calm, stopped pedaling, and stretched my leg. My leg felt ok again. After I got my leg feeling good again, I was able to really put down the hammer. My bike split was 46:xx. To put that into perspective and allow you to realize how fast Chris Lieto is, he threw down a 41 minute time on this course. What is even more ridiculous is that Dave Zabriskie rode a 36:10 bike split! He average 29mph!
Run: This run is beautiful and easy. It is essentially on a flat bike path the whole time. There was nobody out running yet and nobody really to chase since the other guys had about 3 minutes on me. My calf wasn’t feeling good, so I knew they would just be putting more time into me. The run wasn’t very eventful. I did resist the urge to tackle Jay Leno who I saw off to the side spectating.
Summary: This race is really fun. It should be on your “race bucket list”. This race is also a great reminder as to why I love this sport. Everyone is smiling and everyone is just having the time of their lives.

Racing for SELFSudan
I am really excited to now be racing for the foundation SELFSudan to help raise money and awareness. SELFSudan is a non-profit organization that seeks to establish schools of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship in South Sudan.
The foundation was founded by Nyuol Tong, a former South Sudanese refugee, in 2008. One of the most intriguing aspects of this organization is Nyuol and his background. At the age of 5 Nyuol fled his village of Ayeit with his mother and siblings after a militia raid that nearly took his life. Nyuol and his family were internally displaced in northern Sudan for 6 years. At the age of 11, Nyuol fled to Egypt with his family and became refugees. There he met an American professor who helped him secure a scholarship to study at a private boarding school in the United States.
Nyuol returned to Ayeit for the first time in 2010 and was reunited with his father, the chief of Ayeit village. Nyuol called a meeting of community leaders, insisting that women in the village were present, to discuss community needs and plans for reconstruction. Unanimously, the community members asked Nyuol to help them build a school for their children, and to develop a community development fund that could support local business investments, and provide entrepreneurs with access to capital as a tool for building economic opportunity within the community.
My initial plan to raise money for the first school was to race a 24-hour run in Boulder, Colorado and have donors pledge a certain amount of money for every mile I complete. I am still going to do this race, but I want to do my first race for SELFSudan right and prepared. I’m going to use the Boulder race as a “practice” race and then on New Years, I will do a second race in San Francisco. I will setup RUNALEXRUN.org with more information very soon.
